What a craaaaazy wild ride this movie was to make! And you know what? We did it the way we intended! I knew Mark from doing a few commercials together. Never met a director as hardworking and collaborative as him. Jerry Bruckheimer also saw something special in his ads and offered him a movie. Mark said no. Then another script came, and another. It wasn't until the 8th offering that Mark said yes: it was Beverly Hills Cop Axel F.
Let's remember here that Mark had never made a movie. And his first one was going to be a 150 million dollar one! And when I got it offered I hesitated. Not because of Mark ( I knew how bloody talented he was!), but because I never thought I would do these kinds of movies. Never dreamt of it, they are not my thing. But in this occasion, some facts clicked for me:
- I always dreamed (from my filmschool years) to do movies with my talented friends and Mark was one of them.
- I really liked the vibe, the characters and the MUSIC of the original films
- At some point I was going to have to do a 100m dollars movie so producers didn't doubt I could do the 30million dollars cool movies I 'd love to do, and this movie (very important for me) was happening in LA just after having my 2nd kid, Lita.
So we went for it the 80's way! We shot the action scenes for real, we close Rodeo Drive and Wilshire and we flew and helicopter in DTLA! It was crazy! And I enjoyed and could do it better that I imagined. At the end of the day, my job is a combination of teamplaying, common sense and my own taste of things. And the result? I am very happy I made it and that millions of people enjoyed a movie of mine.
Sometimes we all need to get out of our comfort zone so we can grow, learn and enjoy other sides of films and life. So here it is this little film we did with a few good friends.
